So if you’ve read the actual series then this book will make sense, character, landscape, and general tone wise. That is where the good ends. This book is lazy and unnecessary. It reads like a Wikipedia, simple, non commitment to character development, plot intrigue, nor particular social analysis. The is emotional void and forgettable. Most the elements seem to be stolen straight from Russian and English royalty history and simply re worded and renamed. The challenge with a product like this is it is a clear cash grab and makes one wonder if the author ever really wrote the actual series or did he stumble across novels of someone else’s work and simply stole that too. As a popular line says: shame. Shame. Shame.

This book is just a history lesson, the worst book in the franchise

I only made it several chapters in, it is the same as world of ice and fire. Maybe there are some extra chapters in there somewhere, but it seems very redundant to me.

I cannot say whether this was either a good or bad book. The writing was dry, but some of the content was interesting. It would have been better served by a narrator familiar to readers. Perhaps the last living Westeros Dragon would have added some sort of actual personality to the history, or some sense of accuracy. Unreliable narrator is not only a literary term in the case of this supposed history. I kept waiting for some sort of culmination of events- only to find myself dangling into the abyss of another cliffhanger. Disappointing. I cannot find it in myself to castigate a man who has his very own battle to plot, if with pen and not sword.

I’ve read all of the other books through twice, and of course, I watch the show. So I really was looking forward to reading a prequel that explained the beginnings of all things GoT. This is not that. It’s the most boring, repetitive, completely arbitrary bunch of gobbledygook that’s ever been marketed. If Apple truly cared about its faithful readers, it would issue refunds automatically to anyone duped into buying this.

Maybe I’ll wait to see if he finishes this series before I buy another one of his books.
